Honestly without James Earl Jones this movie wouldn't be nearly as good as it is. The plot itself is interesting, but Costner is his usual bland self with his dumb smile and his eminently punchable face. The effects have not aged well at all, though they were okay for the time. The score is not one of Horner's best, feeling boring and repetitive. The supporting cast with Madigan, Liotta, Lancaster, and Busfield is good, though nothing spectacular (though Madigan's character is fun to watch). But James Earl Jones' turn as the reclusive Terrence Mann (a stand-in for J.D. Salinger) is powerful and sticks with you. This, along with the strength of the writing itself, elevates the film from just okay to a decent watch that I'm glad I saw.
