My "Breath of the Wild"-review (since I can't find the page):
Breath of the Wild is one of those games that you will either really love, or really hate. If you love wandering around in an open world, and if you love exploring every little detail, then this game should be right up your alley. If you like a more linear approach to gaming, then you will not get much joy out of this one. And let me make this clear: this game is massively overrated. Is it bad game? Nope, it's quite okay. But it is surely a bad Zelda game. Gone are the amazing dungeons that this series is known for. Instead you get four weirdly-designed halls with puzzles thrown in, and about a hundred mini dungeons, here known as "shrines". The concept of a mini dungeon or mini challenge is certainly not new - after all, The Wind Waker also had a similar approach. But Breath of the Wild fails in one aspect: dungeon design. All shrines look the same. They all spot the same look. Whether you find a shrine on a fiery volcano or in a world made of ice - it doesn't make a difference. They all look the same. Nothing really stands out. The same applies to the bigger dungeons, which are a confusing mess with a horrible map displayed in 3D (instead of the usual top-down view). The same also applies to the bosses. Not a single one was memorable. If you define a good Zelda by having good dungeons, then this is the worst Zelda game ever made. Then there's another thing: your weapons break. Even if you get the master sword, it still gets weaker and needs to be recharged. Thankfully I could avoid the frustration by turning on a cheat that makes weapons unbreakable. Having to find a new weapon every time I slash a couple monsters would have been a very frustrating experience. Another downside: this game is just too damn big. It takes ages to get from A to B. Setting the emulation speed to 4x or even 8x makes it much better and more fun to run around. In my opinion, this game would have been much better had the world map been compressed by 50%. I did enjoy the combat though. I know what you are going to say: "B-b-b-b-but LizardTaro, running around aimlessly for hours is the point of an open world game!111" Well, good for you. I disliked it. You can have an open world and not have to spend hours just to get from one point to another. Breath of the Wild likes to test your patience in that regard. The music is also somewhat forgettable. It's not bad by any means. However, it feels so... muted. It's basically just background noise in this game. I get it, this game is a lot more different than your usual Zelda, but c'mon. I would have loved some epic tunes. The graphics are pretty good, if you run it on an emulator. All in all, I don't really like the new direction this franchise is taking. It should have been a different IP - a completely new one. But I guess the Zelda name sells it... 6/10
