Fallout is an open world role-playing video game developed and published by Interplay Entertainment in 1997. The game has a post-apocalyptic and retro-futuristic setting, in the aftermath of a global nuclear war in an alternate history timeline mid-22nd century. The protagonist of Fallout is an inhabitant of one of the long-term shelters known as Vaults who was tasked to find the Water Chip to save other dwellers from water's shortage. Fallout is considered to be the spiritual successor to the 1988 role-playing video game Wasteland. It was initially intended to use Steve Jackson Games' system GURPS, but Interplay eventually used an internally developed system SPECIAL. The game was critically acclaimed and inspired a number of sequels and spin-off games, known collectively as the Fallout series.     Great game. It offers the true feeling of freedom, but at the same time, it takes itself very seriously and give you a self-contained story. The combat system is great, pretty much a turn-based RPG with action points controlling how much you can do in a turn. The story is fantastic and the world reacts to the player choices. You can pretty much kill anyone in the game, including children, but every action has a reaction, being it perks or story reactions. The S.P.E.C.I.A.L system is well made and very important in the game. While some are less important (like strength and endurance), others can offer pretty much a very different experience every time you put or remove a point from them. A character with high intelligence will play different than a character with low intelligence. In fact, a low-intelligence char won't even be able to use words to talk, giving a comic tone to the game. And, there are different endings depending on your choices during the entire game.

      Editing … Another thing (no more chars left to write), the world doesn't revolve around you. In some RPGs, you can take your time and do fetch quests while the bad guys will wait for you. Not in Fallout. Skipped a town? Too bad, their fate will change for better or for worse. Took too long to kill some guy? Well, maybe it will be too late when you decide it's time to stop wandering around. The game can end at any time, everyone on your vault can die if you stop caring about them. And that's pretty cool. Aaaaand, another thing, you can finish the game without killing people or animals (or mutants). Yes, you can be a diplomat, and that's also pretty cool.

    This game is a lightning rod for emergent gameplay and the forerunner for being able to choose the way you want to play through the game. Many people don't get it, or aren't good at it, and it's understandable that some games set the bar too high for some. That aside, the game was very buggy at release, and frequently caused some rage inducing crashes. (One of the first save early, save often games.) Lurking under the bugs and instabilities, however, was one of the most amazing RPGs out, and took what Wasteland started, then made it more accessible and gave it a visual upgrade and a more "adult" feel. I loved this game in '97 and I still love and play it today.

    I just don't see the attraction for this game. The gameplay including travelling is slow and boring, and the combat is really difficult. Behind the crap though there's some interesting features which, thank god, were given the gameplay to match them in Fallout 3.

    Fallout succeeds in depicting a creative dystopia, telling the players just enough about its world so that they can appreciate their impact, but keeping enough mysterious to evoke a sense of scale. Populating this vast environment is an interesting cast of characters, and while unfortunately none of them experience any character arcs or evolving personalities, their basic traits are entertaining in themselves. The dialogue trees have a relatively large amount of depth, but a degree of choice is removed if the player realises that picking the polite option normally achieves the desired outcome. The UI is overly complicated and the combat system is clunky, but once the player grasps the controls there's much potential for strategic play.
