I still play the heck out of F-Zero X--one of the fastest racers in existence. It's all worth it just to hear that campy announcer shout "YOU'VE GOT BOOST POWER!" This cartridge packed a ton of nutty physics ideas on the circular tracks and the hardcore battle race. And if anyone ever bothered to finish all the races perfectly, there's a randomly-generated X-Cup. I mean, no one could make it without cheats, but hey...

Editing … The random thing was lame since the courses were all very simplistic. On top of that, sometimes it produces a course that causes the AI drivers to die on the first lap. There was no challenge which was ironic considering the fact you don't unlock it until the very end of the game. (GX has a similar problem with unlocking the AX cup, which is easily the second-easiest cup in the game. Should have been included from the start) By the way. I don't recall ever using cheats in F-Zero X.

Editing … It would have been really cool if the tracks had some crazy design like rogue-like Spelunky, but I guess I shouldn't have expected much from the early N64. I never had a huge problem with the tracks, but the X Cup unlock requirements were insane.

Editing … The GX game looked like it had a lot of annoying sections, though. By then I had enough of the series. It hit it's peak in X and then it just didn't impress me anymore. And the GBA version was trash. That stupid A-tapping control scheme ruined it.

Editing … There is this game Speed Racer on Wii that expands on F-Zero when it comes to combat. Very fun, especially with two players. It's one of the few games that used motion controls well imo. (It's also on PS2 but I haven't played that version.)

The word for today is bias. I like to think I can look at games objectively in most cases. This is not one of those cases. F-Zero X was the first game I had ever played and it's always stuck with me. The soundtrack and graphics are nothing special (Although Mute City and Big Blue are catchy) but the racing is fast and furious. The tracks are expertly designed and the X Cup was a great idea. Attacking other cars in this game isn't totally suicidal like it is in the other games and it's incredibly satisfying to see the stars line up on the side. Incredibly solid racing game through and through. Maybe the best. Scratch that. It is the best.

People always seem to recall Wipeout from this era, but I always liked F-Zero much more. Graphics aren't great but it's definitely fast.
