Guys, I need a crash course on Remarque. Anybody have a few spare minutes to write a tldr about what this guy's work is all about?

Editing … He was banned in nazi-Germany, his books take place in Germany, mostly before WW2, and love fascinated him, so he wrote about that too a lot. My favorites from him are All Quiet on the Western Front (obviously), Three Comrades and Arch of Triumph. Wonderful writer. He had good understanding of politics and finance, and he had a way with words, so it's a nice read, at least in English and Finnish. My German is so rusty nowadays that I haven't even tried to read it in German.

Editing … Would you say his writing is still relevant in today's age or are his books a product of the time he was living in? Why was he so obsessed with war as much as I think he was? What does he say about love?

Editing … He thinks that love is great, and inbetween the lines he appears to believe in true love, soulmates and such. I think his books are still relevant, maybe a bit archaic in some ways, but they are a good window into the mindset of that time. I don't think he was as much obsessed as he was interested in war. He was young during WW1 and middle-aged during WW2 so that might influence it. He also wrote books that didn't have that much to do with war.

Editing … Definitely a product of his time, but still a valuable writer with great books, especially if you are interested in the era.

Editing … Someone I talked to referred to him as "the ultimate nihilist". Would you agree with this point of view?
