So I've made another attempt at getting back into this, and I'm just not feeling it. There's just no sense of exploration and adventure, which is a very key component of Dragon Quest for me, and the pacing feels completely off.

For starters, the intro was way too long. It took several hours before I even got to fight anything. And I'm playing the 3DS version, which is supposed to have a much shorter intro.

Then your quest to restore the world starts. You collect a few shards to restore an island, you travel to the past to visit said island and its associated town, you talk to everybody to see what said town's dilemma is, you visit associated dungeon to fix said dilemma, and you travel back to the future to visit the same damn island, the same damn town, and the same damn dungeon all over again. No wonder this is supposed to be the longest game in the series when you have to go through it twice.

The game moves so slow and has so much dialogue that I never get a sense that I'm making actual progress. It feels like these should still be the opening hours and things are gonna change, but I already know this is it. There will never be a point where it "opens up," because the entire game is spent collecting shards and restoring islands.

On top of that, it takes ridiculously long to even unlock the class system. I'm 12 hours in now, and judging from a guide, it looks like it'll take another 8 at least. And then... I'll get to play more of the game, I guess.

Basically, everything I've ever heard of this game is true, and that's not exactly a good thing. Not gonna say it's bad, but so far I'd rather be playing... literally every other entry in the series, including spin-offs.

Editing … I liked the individual stories a lot of the towns have, and the game has sort of a nice mysterious vibe, but yeah after a while I gave up on the game too. The class system doesn't really make it that much more involving and having to find every single one of those shards is annoying. It should've been like Super Mario 64 where you only have to collect some of the shards and some are more difficult to get than others. Having to get every one means looking up gamefaqs a lot.

Editing … I don't know if this was in the original release or not, but the 3DS version has a little indicator on the bottom screen that lights up if there's a shard in the area (town or dungeon), and starts blinking if it's in the same room. As for the game's mysterious vibe... I thought DQ6, my favorite game in the series after DQ8, handled that much better. They do feel cut from the same cloth, though. They were both developed by Heart Beat, have the same exact job system, and have two separate world maps with a lot of mysticism surrounding it. But DQ6 was an amazing experience right from the get go, and DQ7 is a massive drag.

Editing … Ah. I haven't played 6 cause I wasn't really a fan of the DS version of 4. I actually haven't tried 3 or 5 either. I should totally snag the gbc version of 3 sometime.
