Graphically and gameplay-wise almost indistinguishable from it's predecessor for the unitiated, this game holds up to this day because of its tight gunplay, memorable enemies, abstract and often non-linear level design, as well as an amazing and creative modding community, that has created a vast amount of awesome maps and modifications over the last two decades. While some prefer the level design of the original, I find that the new additions puts the sequel slightly ahead.

The best game in the series for me. Everything is refined, the super shotgun was all it needed, and the new enemies add variety. With Doom as my favorite series of all time, I can't put this any lower.

The original Doom codified the FPS genre, and Doom II perfected it.

Doom II has to get into my top 25, even though I consider it nowhere near as great as the original. It added many aspects to the Doom universe which are critical such as the super shotgun and the new monsters. The only thing I've never liked and the reason it rates so much lower than the first game for me is the level design, which seems mostly lazy and disappointing. The secret levels in particular are bad and are not used to create a gameplay device like they were in the original game. Doom 64 outdid this by a mile.
