Just watched this on Crunchyroll. I won't give it a score because I feel like it could be anywhere from a 10 to a 6 and still be legit. On the one hand THEY BROUGHT BACK DIGIMON ADVENTURE 15 YEARS LATER AND IT DIDN'T SUCK ASS! On the other hand, I was only halfway paying attention sometimes and it wasn't super memorable. Overall, they took the project seriously and paid respect to Digimon fans . . . for some reason. I'm still amazed that anyone other than me likes this garbage. It was very different from watching the original show. The animation and character designs and tone and pacing were very different. And that's without taking into account that I was watching in Japanese instead of a shitty dub full of bad jokes. Hearing Gatomon's Japanese voice is the most bizarre for me. All cat characters in western stuff either sound like Catwoman or like Salem. Gatomon sounds like Catwoman in English. Anyway, the "movie" (split in four episodes on Crunchyroll, they're kind of doing a Futurama season 5 thing) worked because the pacing was gentle and nostalgic and the focus was on the characters and easing us into this new visual style and mood. It was emotional without a lot of tears and big emotions. The whole thing was kind of relaxing, even during some of the action scenes. I'm not in love with the new character designs, but the animation in general was pretty good, and once I got used to it, it was very pleasing. The thing that didn't work was Tai's inner conflict, which just seemed forced and there for the obligatory Tai and Matt argument. On the good side though, Mimi didn't suck fifty dicks. How do you like that?

Overall, this eased the pain of Digimon: The Movie. If they ever release a collection of all these "movies" I might buy it to show my support. Though it's so weird to me that these even exist, that there's an army of nostalgic fans like me to pander to in the first place. This is the show everyone hated when I was a kid. But I guess there's just a lot of weirdos out there.

After seeing a few minutes online, I may pick up the blu-ray when it's stateside. The environments look fantastic, and the continuity with all the boys having a crush on Kari was hilarious.

This is going to continue the story of the original two seasons and will be released as six theatrical films instead of a TV series. I'm curious, but really when I go back and watch an episode of the original series it's just a nostalgia thing, and I haven't watched through any seasons past the third one. I might still check it out though someday.
