    Saved!
Very rarely does a genre perfect itself on its first real attempt. And it's even more rare to see it still hold up. Sure, there was a lot going on in the hardcore scene with bands like Rites of Spring that built up to the emo movement, but it was Sunny Day Real Estate that really set the foundation for the genre as we know it today. Diary is a perfect mixture of crackling, whiny vocals, cluttered, noisy guitars, and grim, edgy lyrics. But, it builds itself off its own flaws and even exploits them to push the sincerity and desperation. If you were to ask me what the best album of the first real emo movement was, I wouldn't hesitate to turn to this.
