Chrono TriggerVideo Game (J-Style RPG)

Chrono Trigger (Japanese: クロノ・トリガー, Hepburn: Kurono Torigā) is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995. Chrono Trigger 's development team included three designers that Square dubbed the "Dream Team": Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Square's Final Fantasy series; Yuji Horii, a freelance designer and creator of Enix's popular Dragon Quest series; and Akira Toriyama, a freelance manga artist famed for hi... Do I want the PSone version on PSN for $4, or the DS version for $20? How big of an upgrade is the DS version?

Gries The PS1 version has longer loading times, but animated cutscenes that have a very Dragon Ball-esque vibe. Source: I own a physical PS1 copy of the game and completed it in 2013

Pudding The load times on the PS version were horrible, but that was the least of the game's concerns for me. DS version is considered to be the ultimate version.

Pudding The DS version has the same cutscenes, no?

richardpale Anyone played the Android version? I've heard bad things but I really want it on my phone.

Gries Imho the shorter loading times aren't worth the extra 16 bucks

Not Important In my understanding the DS version is indeed the ultimate version. richardpale, a friend of mine told me that he'd rather chop his hands off than play the abomination that the game is on Android. But he is a bit hyperbolic at times, so maybe it's not that bad.

Caff DS verison has the same cutscenes, and additional content. The mobile version is good, but not as good. I recommend the DS version, or when/if they release the mobile version on PC.

richardpale From what I understand the Android version is the DS version but with full touchscreen controls that apparently are pretty good for the most part. If that was the deal I'd get it since it sounds better than playing it on an emulator but the catch seems to be that there's DRM and if you go a few hours without internet (on a plane for example) it won't let you play.

One of the best of all time....I think. I never finished it so can't rank it higher. I rented it as a kid and only played a small portion of it...but that portion was so awesome, it still made my top 100 list.

It's a perfectly playable game and the boss fights can be really fun. The music's a mixed bag for me but overall I like the soundtrack. But I find most of the combat way too easy and don't get a whole lot out of the story and characters outside of a couple sections, plus I'm not a big fan of the art style. The future has a neat atmosphere though.

nodley I think it's great until you can move freely through time, then I hate it for some reason.

Filly See, I thought this game was way prettier than like the Final Fantasies on SNES. It's more detailed, including the character sprites, which allows for pretty expressive animations, and I find it more colorful, imaginative, and lively too. The game also sucked me in right from the start while I played FFVI for an hour and then got bored. Time travel tends to be an easy win with me, but seeing the story piece itself together across thousands of years, in an anachronistic fashion, was just really compelling to me. Do agree that the characters themselves aren't much to write home about, though.

If I had to make a Top 100 music tracks in gaming, about a third of them would be from Chrono Trigger. Highlights include the various Guardia-themed tracks, the Kingdom of Zeal's assortment of atmospheric tracks, 2300 AD's music when exploring, the basic Battle music, the character themes for Frog, Robo, Magus, and Lavos, and the dungeon music for Magus's Castle, Tyran Castle, and the Black Omen. Plus, "At The Bottom of Night" and "The Day The World Revived" are genuinely emotional.

I just unintentionally listed about half of the game's soundtrack as hgihlights, but that's only because so many tracks fully capture their corresponding area, character, or other subject, and do so in a way that makes the best use of the SNES's capabilities.

Singing Mountain is also phenomenal, but it was cut from actual gameplay.

Frog is the coolest ally ever. I guess the rest of the game is cool too.

Chrono Trigger was undoubtedly a masterpiece at its time of release, but time hasn't been especially kind to it. Certain areas of it, such as world and character interactions are incredible to this day, but its gameplay and level design haven't aged particularly well. Such a shame that, during my time with the game, I was thinking more about its infuriatingly tedious gameplay and level design than all of its cool and interesting ideas.
Pros: Plenty of revolutionary ideas, superb time traveling mechanics and the way your actions influence the world, solid story and characters, some solid music, New Game+ and multiple endings, neat little touches
Cons: Cringe worthy padding, tedious gameplay, plenty of unavoidable fights, uninteresting visual and level design, poorly rewards exploration

Martenas Arts Funny, i find that 3d titans such as FF7 dont age well, especially due to the fact that it used early 3d polygonal graphics & endless cut-scenes (also contrived storytelling). When it comes to chrono trigger i have few complaints. Still looks gorgeous, awesome combat (where you can do different combos), re-playability form the get go, choices that matter, and multiple endings, with one of the most epic stories. Whats not to love sour puss ? Weird how people can feel so differently about a subject, hu !

Chrono trigger is time travel done right. It isn't confusing, and it actually works really well with the story. The battle system is the best of any RPG i have ever played, being frantic while also being easy to understand. Hard to critique, just go play it.

My personal vote for the best Square game made (that I've played). It controls decently, the story, for revolving around time travel, is surprisingly very well done, the soundtrack is killer, the characters are all well developed and likable, and, for its time, a very detailed art style. It's just as great as everyone makes it out to be, and possibly even better.

I'm not actually a huge fan of RPGs but this game is an exception. Most RPGs that I have played were slow and overcomplicated in my opinion (besides the Pokemon series of course), but when I played this game for the first time, boy was I surprised. I now completely understand why this game is called a masterpiece by so many and I love it. The battle system is fairly simple and the story is amazing with some of the best characters that I've ever seen in a video game.

My top five is fairly fluid (especially my top two), but if forced to pick, Chrono Trigger would be My Favorite Game Of All Time. It did everything right. It was paced to within an inch of perfection, had fascinating locations and characters and somehow got me invested in a story that was, in retrospect, very bland.

This is what the Super Nintendo was about for me, the impact SquareSoft left on it. Oh boy they did with this. Amazing music, great story, great mechanics, time travel, multiple endings, (not a fan of the whole silent protagonist gig but oh well) Chrono Trigger was really as good as JRPGs got in the 16-bit era.

Chrono Trigger is one of the best classic RPGs of all time. Absolutely great soundtrack (Tyranno Lair is my favorite!), thrilling storyline, diverse and big worlds, simple ATB battle system, lots of different enemies and characters, lots of items and weapons, lovely animations and graphics... there are literally no bad things I can say about this game! Sometimes I needed to check out a walkthrough because it was unclear to me where I had to go to, but besides this everything is great in this game. Even after beating the game there are some new challenges (like getting all items) so there is also replay-value. Overall I enjoyed this game much more than Super Mario RPG and I recommend it to every classic RPG fan.

Simply put, Chrono Trigger is truly perfect. Not one person I know who has played it would say otherwise. I'm not even going to bother blathering on with the details, all you need to know is that you must play it if you haven't.

Regarding the DS version, I'm wildly impressed that it's been made even more perfect with a customizable interface, remastered sound, well improved translation, and all the extra features of the PSone version. Glad my first full playthrough was on DS.

No buts about it: If you get the chance at some point in your lifetime, play through Chrono Trigger. You won't regret it.

Supergroup projects aren't supposed to work this well, but somehow this crossover project between Squaresoft and Enix near their creative heights resulted in this unique, polished RPG. The story is short but the multiple endings contained in the game is still very progressive. It isn't perfect, personally I prefer the grander, epic nature of Final Fantasy VI over CT's mostly lighter story, as well as it's ensamble of characters. Still it is hard to deny this is a very well put together game.
