I beat it. And yeah, I guess Christopher Bee was in this game. Except I didn't really see any bees. Maybe he was in that forest outside the castle...

This is a fine example of how an NES game did more with less. Limited but tight controls with great game design around it. Iconic soundtrack. Can be difficult for gamers not familiar with the NES library.

I can finally put this game behind me. I beat it for the first time today in the wee hours of the morning. I beat Castlevania II when I was younger but it always aggravated my OCD that I didn't beat the first one. I guess the only Nintendo Hard game left for me is Ninja Gaiden.

Wow - this bitch is HARD. Really, really hard. But that's the beauty of Castlevania, isn't it? A tribute to the Universal Age of Horror Films through an atmospheric and haunting castle with some of the most inconvenient architecture in Transylvania. Oh, and it's one of the most challenging games on the NES. Almost every part of this game is an individual nightmare, from the hunchbacks to the goddamn Frankenstein monster and those whip-sponges known as knights. EVERYTHING in this game is a challenge in and of itself, and the only way for me to emphasize it is to say it twitch in this paragraph. However, the bright color palette, stellar soundtrack and tight controls keep it from being a painful experience. It's quite the opposite.

Castlevania for the NES started one of the most polished and critically acclaimed game series of all time, and still lives up today as a great reminder of what made the NES so awesome. Castlevania has the 1980's technique of making a game incredibly hard to improve it's longevity, and it works really well here. However, sometimes this can go to painfully frustrating levels of hard, and it's all about control. Control is key to any castlevania game, without it, you're practically screwed. However, in this game, it takes control and shoves it up your ass. How? Simple, Simon Belmont moves too damn slow. Now on to the positives. The level design is great, amazing in fact. The boss encounters are hardly unique or exciting, but they will get you into states of shock at some points. Figuring out any pattern, any weak point, is the best way to do this. The satisfaction is incredible. Finding out where you went wrong and correcting it is one of the best feelings a game can give.

Castlevania is one of those NES classics that are darn hard but the gameplay and the cool premise keeps you coming back. Too hard for me to play today but back then it was pretty sweet.
