Aah, Billy Hatcher. Played this game on the Dolphin emulator with a friend recently and while it was a wonderful experience, it's was also a frustrating experience. This is a great and creative 3D platform game with some very annoying nitpicks. In this game instead of jumping on enemies or using weapons, you use eggs to defeat enemies which are crows in various monsterly forms, trying to take over the world. Simply move to an egg and you will automatically roll the egg around, squishing and hurting enemies in its way. Of course you can also perform various moves with your egg, such as jumps, ground-pounds and so on. This may sound like an annoying and gimmicky concept but you will get used to it quickly, and rolling over enemies is just very satisfying. The levels are well-designed and lively, filled with NPCs, power-ups, enemies, switches, traps and more. The music is also very good; some tunes will stay in your head for a while. The camera can be your worst enemy in some scenarios. There is a level in which you have to go through a narrow hole in a wall and the camera gets stuck in front of the wall, so you don't see what's in front of you and you are basically playing it blind (of course the path is also very narrow after the wall so you will easily and often fall to your death). Yeah, the camera is pretty weak. It works like 80% of the time, but 20% of the time it will fuck you over. Another very annoying thing is that very often, in order to reach higher ledges, you have to ground-pound with your egg. Too bad that most of the time, you will spin around, reach the ledge, and your character will automatically let go of the egg, leaving the egg on the ledge while your character falls down. Then you have to wait like 30 seconds for a new egg to spawn and you have to it again. If you fail again, have fun waiting another 30 seconds and so on. Then of course there's lots of bottomless pits which means a guaranteed death and loss of progression. The game is not very generous with checkpoints.

Overall I think this could have been an absolutely amazing game, if only the devs had ironed out a few quirks. As it stands, Billy Hatcher is a fine 3D platform game with amazing character designs (especially love the enemies with their feisty grins) and some nitpicks. It really deserves a higher score and a remaster. 6.5 / 10. 8 /10 if you play with save-states, making the game's annoying faults less punishing to the player.
