As it's free on GOG.com, I gave this game a go.
Visually, it's dated, but due to the resergence in retro graphics I can see many people being fine with this. Playing this on a mobile would probably be better nowadays. The story, music, characters and voice acting are all very good, and help to make this point and click adventure quite a memorable and enjoyable game.
The main character, Foster, and Joey, his robot sidekick are great to boot!

Beneath a Steel Sky's gameplay mechanics are much simpler (and more limited) than LucasArts adventure games like Monkey Island, (with only the ability to look at, use, and occasionally combine items), but the game is still much more challenging than most games of the genre. The cast is great (especially Joey), and it's nice that a lot of the minor characters turn out to have bigger roles than first expected, making every conversation seem important in its own way. The atmosphere is very effective, with appropriate art and music throughout. The voice acting is good, delivering humorous lines fantastically, but most of the emotional moments feel quite forced, occasionally verging on cringe worthy. The story is engaging with a satisfying ending.
