Sha recently directed me to a treasure trove of digital comic goodness, so I am taking advantage of the access to older comics to read the pre-52 stories. And because it is me, I'm trying to do it in chronological order (as much as possible). So to that effect, I read a bunch of stories from Batman's "First Year". Some were good, some sucked. My ranking sits thus:

    - Batman and the Monster Men (Very Good)
    - Year One (Good)
    - Prey (Good)
    - Do You Understand These Rights? (Good)
    - The Man Who Laughs (Good)
    - Batman and the Mad Monk (Decent)
    - Shaman (Meh)

I'm also trying to make my own personal chronological reading order for my own amusement. Thankfully thus far the majority of inconsistencies and contradictions have occurred in the lackluster issues, so I can omit them entirely from my own headcanon.

Editing … When I played Marvel Trading Card Game on the PSP, that got me interested in comics and I ended up buying some Marvel comics as a result. The same is sort of happening now with Injustice and DC. (although I became interested in DC anyway when New 52 dropped and ended up buying a volume) I even see that you read Injustice as well. Posts like this are interesting because I get to know which stories I ought to check out.

Editing … whoa, there are a lot of them. I assumed it was a single issue or handful of issues done as a one time thing to promote the game.

Editing … Which ones do I need to buy if I want to read the one where Bruce Wayne is on a jury and has to defend Mr. Freeze? Did you read that story, Silent?

I kind of had felt something similar to the Seinfeld effect when I was reading this, in the sense that everything this book did that was groundbreaking I have seen countless times already in other adaptations of the Batman mythos, so I didn't feel blown away by anything. I feel like Batman Mask of the Phantasm explores the Batman's origins with greater depth and sophistication than what is offered in this book. Getting to see Bruce deal with his parents' death and its effects on his psyche, and that incredible scene where we watch him put on the cowl for the first time went way beyond the characterization that he was given in the entire comic in my opinion. Mask of the Phantasm even had a similar police confrontation scene which I also think it did better because the stakes were so high. That being said, the art in this comic is really impressive and I enjoyed the amount of focus that was given to Jim Gordon in this comic because he has always been one of my favorite characters. Overall, Batman Year One was a very engaging, light read that left me wanting a little more.

Editing … I think the book is at its best when it's focusing on Jim. The foundation for the modern Gordon is all there.
