A podcast that I listen to recently did a "Top 10 Animated Movies" episode and it made me want to revisit my own list and watch more of them to be able to make an informed choice. Of course, it will just have to be a mental revisit since lists are down for now, but what are your must see animated movies? Ideally things that aren't sequels or based on a TV series that I have to watch first

Stuff on my list to watch so far... Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Kiki's Delivery Service, Toy Story 4, Coco and Onward (due to subject matter, I have to devote time to watch these when I can also fit a "recovery period" into my schedule), Grave of the Fireflies (same), Kubo and the Two Strings, Coraline. Hear The Girl Who Lept Through Time, Millennium Actress, and Paprika are good too

Editing … Many good mentions. You should have a good time with these. I also liked #The Secret World of Arrietty for its charme — #Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse for its unique animation style — #Summer Wars for its visuals and funny family drama — #Your name. for its pulling on the heartstrings (though, I kinda feel like this is a rip-off of #Erased on some level … but not necessarily a bad one).

Editing … Spider-Verse is amazing. Good call. Somehow it slipped my mind, maybe because it's based on a super hero license. My recs were going to be Tarzan and Pocahontas, as well as Zootopia (obvious) and Kung Fu Panda. I rather liked Cars as well. Coco is a solid film, I like it but don't love it. Kubo is decent at best. Oh, almost forgot Trolls. Hilarious movie.

Editing … Also seen Summer Wars! Also, its weird, I've seen almost every major Disney animated movie and the only ones I would call "Top 10" material are Wreck-It Ralph (because the "moral" of the story hits home for me) and maybe The Emperor's New Groove? Guess I'm not as much of a raging Disney fangirl as i thought.

Man why do cartoons suck so much now? Its like there isnt a single thing on TV I can watch with my kids and like. Star Vs. is the only half tolerable thing.

Editing … But yeah, I'm in agreement with Crash, I think ever since Adventure Time first came out, there has been a revival of really great animated tv shows. I haven't seen Steven Universe of Wander Over Yonder yet, but I would definitely recommend Gravity Falls because it's a ton of fun and kid-friendly.

Editing … @Master Crash, I like those shows too but they don't really show any of them on TV in the US anymore! :( Steven Universe occasionally, and you can still catch Gravity Falls reruns, but I'm pretty sure they only ever show Adventure Time when there's a new episode and then you'll never catch that episode again. Cartoon Network in the US doesn't show anything good anymore and Nick is half Spongebob and half this annoying show called the Loud House.

I like this presentation because it demonstrates the impact a game's (for example, death) animation has by adding elements to it step by step.

Ramble time! I think one reason I find animation easier to get immersed in than live action is because there aren't any actors or actresses standing there. Animation cuts out the middle man and goes straight to the characters. One reason I like Buffy is cause they're very animation style characters. Their personality comes first and quality acting comes second. The characters have their own way of talking that's separate from how good acting is supposed to work. Nicolas Brendan looks like a hunk but it doesn't matter. He's a dork; he acts like a dork, and that's what I see. In later seasons when Willow evolves into a more confident, outgoing person, her appearance evolves to match it. I like that. Some people complained that in Spider-Man 3, when Peter went emo, his appearance changed alongside his personality, but I like that. I like blunt, expressive visuals. In MLP, you can figure out character traits just by looking at their hair. Rainbow Dash's mane is wild and unkempt because she cares about soaring through the wind and not so much about looking pretty. Rarity's mane is stylized and she wears eyeliner because she cares about her looks. Pinkie Pie's big poofy cotton candy mane is a hint that she's kooky. Applejack's cowboy hat tells you she's tough. When I glance at a show or movie and all I see is a bunch of actors and actresses standing around, I feel bored because I don't care about celebrities. When I see a music video and there's a celebrity dancing around I feel annoyed because I don't come to music for that. One reason I love The Decemberists is because the protagonist or point of view of the songs can feel so drastically different from song to song. The singer isn't providing the same type of attitude from song to song to have an image all his own. His image doesn't matter. Death of the author. Just immersion. If I cared about reality, I wouldn't be a nerd.
