"A Vampyre Story" is a point-n-click adventure about a French opera singer who has been turned into a vampire a long time ago – about which she's living in denial. Mona is locked inside a castle in a foreign country and has to spend her time with a creepy wealthy guy who idolizes her. Her only solice is her pet, the talking bat Froderick. And I really like the idea of a sidekick in a PNC adventure; dialogs are much more reasonable and expectable when interacting with items than monologues are.

Unfortunately however, I wasn't happy with the voices at all. This Transsylvanian parody of a country is supposed to be Austrian-Hungarian in nature (as it comes through in the story). Yet, only a couple of those accents were fitting as – particularly in the castle – people are talking with (what I know from TV as) Italian and/or New Yorker accents. Especially Froderick who talks a lot. Way too much overdone, imo. And Mona … so high-pitched, ugh … incredibly annoying.

Editing … The "rooms" and backgrounds are all 2D (except in cutscenes) with the characters in 3D, while the art style has strong similarities with #Monkey Island 3, which has something to do with artist Bill Tiller working on both games.

Editing … #Full Throttle's and MI3's "Verb Coin" is used to full effect – with Hand, Mouth, Eye and "Turn into a bat" power, providing lots of opportunities for solutions, and even more opportunities for facetious comments. Seriously, the amount of trivial jokes is astonishing. It's almost as if that was the main theme: "jokes everywhere" … and the vampire thing was just a secondary theme. More importantly though, there is this interesting "I'll keep that in mind" mechanic: you're basically scheming plans as you go, with placeholders in your inventory representing that item; and when it's time to execute, you see Mona or Froderick leave the screen and go get that item before the actual execution animation. This delay of taking the item makes the character feel less kleptomaniac than in any other PNC game. But is that worth the effort? I really don't know. But it *is* a different approach, and I commend the devs for trying that.

Editing … Apart from the fact that I didn't quite knew the purpose of the two spells that you have to work on in chapter One until those spells are ready and used, I personally consider the puzzles to be coherent. The game lacks a hint system, though, which it would have benefitted from immensely. I mean, that's what "talking to sidekick" can be great for; it was a missed opportunity.

Editing … At the beginning of both chapters, I felt overwhelmed by how there was too much to do, too many "rooms" to explore and items to interact with; I wish there had been better spacing in that regard.

Editing … Moreover … how to put it … the ending was not very satisfying. A sequel doesn't seem to be in the making, according to Wikipedia, due to licensing shenanigans. But instead, a prequel is being worked on. Both games I would probably play … eventually … if they ever came out.

Editing … The game sadly has an ample amount of bugs, so better save often if you have to play it.
