I don't think this one aged well; the presentation holds up but the gameplay kinda doesn't now that this style of game is so common. The RPG elements combined with the exploration quickly wreck the difficulty curve (probably general balance issues too and maybe even some outright bad design) and as a result many bosses just could not do anything to me. And when the regular enemies don't pose a threat Alucard doesn't move fast enough. The game's second half was often boring and magnified all the other problems. Oh, and screw spells in this game. While I'm not a fan of fighting games, I'm fine with them existing as long as they keep their dirty awful diagonal controls away from the genres I actually like! Think I'll try this again with the 99 Luck code that minimizes other stats, fight bosses/navigate their areas by the order the librarian lists (presumably the intended one) unless hugely inconvenient, eliminate excessive exploration, equip poor armor (maybe none?), and see if it works out better. I'll try Richter Mode too.

It's funny to think that the series defining game for this sidescroller franchise was on the ps1. It was ballsy of them to not transition to 3D like everyone else was at the time.

Similar to Dawn of Sorrow but, this is where the concept began. As Alucard, you must find your father Dracula by navigating his monster-filled, maze-like castle. Earning new abilities grants access to additional areas of the castle. I loved growing more powerful as a character and finding more and, more rooms and secrets within the walls of Castlevania. I also loved tackling the huge and, imaginative boss monsters. The knock I have against this game though is how easy it can be though.

Symphony of the Night was the best of the Metroid-esque Castlevania games (and rightfully so being the first). Many see it as a "correct" implementation of what Castlevania 2 so nobly tried many years before. It's a fantastic game in all respects, and would probably rank much higher on my top 25 if there weren't just so many games I treasure slightly more. The art, soundtrack, and design are all excellent. Only fault I can find is that it's a bit too easy. The last few IGA-created Castlevania games however are much too difficult, so it's a fault I can easily forgive.

I will never forget the first time I played SOTN and just being lost in the experience for hours & hours on end. To this very day I still play Castlevania SOTN every year or so. For me this is one of those magical gems that I will cherish until my last breath.

Richter Belmont - Die Monster! You Don't Belong In This World
Dracula - It Was Not By My Hand That I Am Once Again Given Flesh, I Was Called Here By Humans Who Wish To Pay Me Tribute!
Richter Belmont - Tribute!? You Steal Men's Souls And Make Them Your Slaves!
Dracula - Perhaps The Same Could Be Said Of All Religions..
Richter Belmont - Your Words Are As Empty As Your Soul! Mankind Ill Needs A Savior Such As You!
Dracula - What Is A Man? A Miserable Little Pile Of Secrets! But Enough Talk... Have At You!

(When attempting to play the game disc in a CD player)
Alucard - As you can see, this is a Playstation black disc. Cut #1 contains computer data, so please don't play it. But you probably won't listen to me anyway, Will you?

Although the portable Castlevania games are also excellent, the first sprawling adventure will always remain a classic. The graphics look like a masterpiece made from gothic French sculptures and valuable Middle Age suits of armor. The humongous bosses are intricate and surprisingly difficult. Even the environment is filled with cute, quirky items that people wouldn't expect in a Castlevania game.
