Favorite Samurai Movies

Whether you are drawn to the wandering swordsman, or great battles on horseback within the misty landscapes of Japan, samurai cinema, otherwise known as “chanbara” is what made the world take notice of Japanese cinema when Rashomon (1950) won great international acclaim. Many of Japan’s greatest directors such as Akira Kurosawa, Masaki Kobayashi, Kihachi Okamoto and Hideo Gosha worked tirelessly to craft the iconic image of the samurai we still know to this day. The influence of Samurai cinema can be seen in many places from movies to comics and games. Even though the day of the samurai is long gone, the spirit of the samurai lives on in these great works.
