Favorite Game Boy Games

The original Game Boy is the first successful handheld console of the world, thus making gaming on the go feasible and fun. Its library contains early iterations of many popular franchises, as well as timeless classics that are still a big part of the video games industry, even today. After receiving a hardware update, the Game Boy Color even added colors to the experience. Since it was backwards compatible, it offered a vast game line-up since its first day on the market.

Is there any reason why we treat the first and second Gameboy as one and the same handheld console?

Editing … The Game Boy color is basically the Game Boy... with color. I am pretty sure (though not certain) that the GBC games can be played in the original Game Boy in black and white.

Editing … I’ve always looked at it this way, and wikipedia seems to agree with me here - gen 4: gameboy 1 (original, pocket, light) | gen 5: gameboy 2 (color) | gen 6: gameboy 3 (advance, sp, micro) | gen 7: DS 1 (light, dsi, xl) | gen 8: DS 2 (2ds, 3ds, xl) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/comparison_of_Nintendo_portable_consoles

Editing … Actually, Mr. Pedro, only certain GBC games were playable on a Game Boy. In any case I do see the argument for splitting GB and GBC. My main argument for splitting them is that Game Boy is the "first" handheld system. It somewhat demeans its significance to pair it up with a more powerful system which was released much later.

Editing … A proper split however would probably count GB-compatible GBC games as rankable in both.

Editing … (late) The Game Boy Color was Nintendo's newest handheld for only about 2.5 years, when they released the GBA. It pretty much relied on the Pokemon craze (both RBY and GSC) to make people care, IIRC it had no exclusives for several months, and a huge portion of its library consisted of enhanced ports. While it does have some other good games, the only important legacy it left was in Pokemon, the GBC Zeldas, and (in Japan at least) Dragon Warrior Monsters. Whatever the merits of its hardware, the system was and is treated as an upgrade to the original Game Boy, to the point that Nintendo even groups their sales together.
