My main argument for splitting them is that Game Boy is the "first" handheld system. It somewhat demeans its significance to pair it up with a more powerful system which was released much later.
Saved!MagusEditing … (late) The Game Boy Color was Nintendo's newest handheld for only about 2.5 years, when they released the GBA. It pretty much relied on the Pokemon craze (both RBY and GSC) to make people care, IIRC it had no exclusives for several months, and a huge portion of its library consisted of enhanced ports. While it does have some other good games, the only important legacy it left was in Pokemon, the GBC Zeldas, and (in Japan at least) Dragon Warrior Monsters. Whatever the merits of its hardware, the system was and is treated as an upgrade to the original Game Boy, to the point that Nintendo even groups their sales together.
