If one assumes Smash is a fighting game (I think it is, but I don't have any problem with people saying it isn't), then it's the most accessible series in the genre by a wide margin. Ergo, for a lot of people, Smash is the only series in that genre they will even play.
Saved!Splatterhouse 5Editing … I could never get into the Smash Bros. series (or any party brawler, for that matter). They always have me jonesing for a real fighter, and it's not even one of my favorite genres.
