    Saved!
Finally worked up the courage to watch this. I wanted to avoid spoilers but had thought that the kid's dad died/was dead in the movie, which is a grief trigger for me since I lost my dad traumatically and even four years later, the wound feels somewhat fresh. Knowing what I know now, Onward actually errs more on the side of being a little "too real" iykwim. I can't overstate how much I love everything about this movie. I could be off base as a complete gringo, but it really seems like a heartfelt love letter to Mexican culture that seems like the creators actually consulted with people from that culture to ensure it was well done. The Spanglish peppered throughout the dialogue and soundtrack, the way the music actually emulates mariachi music, the GORGEOUS visuals, the way it introduces Mexican traditions to kids in an accessible and fun way... The concept and execution of the Land of the Dead and how it experiences Dia de los Muertos is so imaginative, and I love the whole aesthetic of the skeleton characters and the fact that eccentric and legendary artist Frida Kahlo was a somewhat prominent character. And so many great themes! Memory! Family! Forgiveness! Grief and healing! The impact of intergenerational trauma! I can see myself going back to this one again and again.
