So who's playing this? I'm currently 7 hours in and I still don't know if I like it yet. It's sufficiently gameplay-driven to at least get its hooks in me somewhat (catching the mirages, seeing them transfigure), but it's got a ton of problems. For starters, it's probably the most linear monster battling game I've played, with level design straight out of FFX. Unlike in FFX though, you at least have the option to warp between areas right from the get-go.

The game feels surprisingly dated in all the wrong ways. Why can I only save at save points? Why does losing a battle send me back to the hub world, or give me a Game Over when fighting bosses? Why can't I just warp from everywhere rather than having to find a portal? And heck, why are there still random encounters, and why can’t I turn them off? For me, the game is combining the worst aspects of modern and classic FF. It is the opposite of Bravely Default in that regard.

There's also a lot of problems with the game that might be exclusive to the Vita release. So take note @Gries He, because I strongly recommend you get the PS4 version instead.

Like a lot of triple-A Vita games, this game pushes the hardware further than it should've. Everything just feels sluggish, and you'll encounter some significant framerate dips from time to time. Even something as simple as navigating the menu has noticeable delays. And because they couldn't fit the full game onto a 4gig cartridge, you have to download the Japanese and English voice packs separately, at 650megs each. The sound quality on the voices is quite poor as they had to put some serious compression on it.

Another issue I have with the Vita version is that the Grandia-style timebar is too small to really make out what the turn order is. I play the game on Battle Speed 5 in Active Mode, so things can get very hectic, and it can be difficult to keep track of who I’m controlling. Having my party unstacked becomes a nightmare. You can set the battle system to Classic text-menu mode, rather than the default face button-based mode, but it doesn't replace the Grandia bar with classic ATB bars.

From the trailers it might seem like this was a portable game first and foremost, but it feels more like a home console game downscaled to the Vita.

Anyway, I'm gonna keep playing it a bit more, but so far the story and characters haven’t really grabbed me, and I often find myself fast forwarding through the cutscenes as the subtitles are still easily readable. What's mostly keeping me going is the monster collecting and art style.

This game was supposed to introduce new players to the FF series, but I don't think I'd recommend this to people who aren’t already fans of the series. Digimon Cyber Sleuth is a better choice if you're just looking for a Pokemon-like on PS4 and Vita.

Editing … I went to a bit more than the level 40 and I absolutely agree, it's also the most linear monster battling game I've ever played. The monsters are cute, the final fantasy cameos are great, the sphere grid is fine, but everything else from the story to the villages is quite disappointing. I was expecting more from a Final Fantasy game.

Editing … Hmm, I am interested to see if I end up feeling the same. I am starting it tonight when I get home :)

Editing … Again, it’s not a bad game. I just feel that with how modern-FF it tries to be, it shouldn’t have all these classic elements bog it down. It’s having a really good carrot-on-a-stick effect on me, though. Sooooo close to turning my Cockatrice into Valefor, which I’ll probably keep with me for the remainder of the game, along with Behemoth (still in baby form), Shiva (still in baby form), and Right Claw. Be sure to get a Right Claw as soon as you get to Pyreglow Forest, and make a b-line for Subdue and No Escape (like False Swipe and Mean Look respectively in Pokemon). You can encounter Cactrots in the same forest, and with Right Claw on your team, you’re gonna catch that mofo. I’ve also heard that with the Day One DLC, you can catch Shiva and Ifreeta as soon as you open up the Colosseum (just a couple hours in really), and that they’re game-breakingly powerful. But their mirage boards don’t allow you to transfigure them back into earlier forms, so you’re better off training them up from babies. Just a couple of tips you might find useful. Anyway, I’m now 10 hours in and have since encountered Refia and visited Saronia from FF3, and I must say, when that FF3 overworld music started playing, it definitely put a smile on my face. But I don’t have much of an attachment to most of the FF games, so I don’t see that happening very often. Again, this is why I’d mostly recommend the game to people who are already fans of the series.

Editing … I'm a fan of the series and let me tell you that everytime a new village or a new cameo comes up, I'm hyped, but as soon as the story unfolds, it bores me. Tell me, what do you think about the villages Demi? Don't you find them a bit empty? Sure they are nicely done but there's nothing to do, no shops, only a few quests. I agree, it's not a bad game, but it could've been so much better. And btw, I got Valefor in my team, Behemoth and Shiva too. :P

Editing … Yeah, I’d say they’re one step above the “towns” in FF13, but below the ones in FFX. At least you can talk to the NPCs, but there’s really nothing to do. They had a specific type of game they were going for, and they made that game. I personally prefer more meat on my towns, though. Anyway, my girlfriend who's more of a casual gamer is currently playing through this as well. She can make her way through Pokemon and Yo-kai Watch just fine, but she did hit a few stumbling blocks in this. She’s still liking it so far though.
